Analysing votes share among the political parties in Telangana

In a plainly comparison of the vote shares in 2018 and 2023,  the BRS lost around 10 percentage in vote share between 2018 and 2023, which is exactly how much the Congress gained in the state between the two elections.

The pattern is discernible even at the assembly constituency (AC) level when comparing the share of votes that BRS received in Congress and Congress between 2018 and 2023. Voter share calculations for the Congress have changed to account for the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), Telangana Jan Samiti, and Communist Party of India (CPI), since the Congress ran an alliance for office in 2018. Out of the 119 ACs in the state, the Congress challenged all but one of them in 2023.

At the level of ACs switching parties, the Congress’s gambit at the expense of the BRS remains valid. The Congress has won 64 ACs this time around, 13 of which it had won in 2018. Only four of the Congress’s triumphs this year are in ACs that were held by other parties in 2018, whereas 47 of the Congress’s gains in 2023 have been in ACs that the BRS won in 2018.

The Grand Old Party found hope in Telangana, the youngest state in India, as it was about to capture 64 seats, more than the simple majority of 60 required to form a government in the southern state. Meanwhile, the rest of the country was witnessing a lackluster performance from the Congress. The Congress’s triumph was largely fueled by its performance in rural areas.
